The Good Prince – A Spiritual Story by Guy Finley
Once upon a time, there was a country that was ruled by a good king and it was a good country. This good king and country heard a rumor that a neighboring country, an evil and dark country that was ruled by a very dark evil Wizard, was sending over troops to try and take over the good kingdom.
Well, the good king had a good prince and when that good prince heard that the good king was sending off the troops to stop the incursion of the evil ones, he wanted to be involved and help protect the good country. This felt natural to him, but he knew that his father (the good king) wouldn't allow it because he was too young. So the good prince made up a disguise, and when all the horsemen rolled out of the great gates he got on his horse and rode along hoping that nobody would notice.
It didn't matter though because most people didn't know him anyway since he had been sheltered inside of that kingdom. He finally got to that place where the great battle was (the good kingtom won, by the way), and during that great battle the young prince and thousands of men were knocked off of their horses and clubbed down. When the young prince landed he hit his head so hard that he had a sort of amnesia, and he couldn't remember who he was. This happened to many thousands of men, and upon seeing this the evil warriors guided these fallen men back to their own evil country.
Part of living in this dark kingdom was a continual spell that enamnated from the center of the kingdom that made everyone believe that they were in the right place where they were supposed to be and that they were doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing. This spell was just part of the kingdom, a kingdom in which there were governers and generals that worked with the evil wizard. These men were horrible human beings and never did anything that was truly “right.” They only served others when it served their own best interests.
Something wonderful started to happen to the prince, though. Even though he had no idea who he was, and none of the other good men recognized him because either they didn't know him or they'd forgotten due to the spell, he began to have a difficult conflict within himself. This was a real struggle, and he couldn't figure out what was going on because he had been told by the governers of this evil country to do certain things that were both good for him and for everyone else that he did them to. What was he told to do? He was told to fight, struggle, to take, and bring it back. That this was the right thing to do he was told.
But something was happening within himself, and he couldn't reconcile his thoughts: “How is it possible that if i'm doing what is right for me, I feel so wrong? How is that possible?” At first this feeling was tiny, but little by little no matter how powerful the spell was, the good prince began to realize that he had been brainwashed to believe that everything he was told to do was right. He wanted to do what was right, but in his heart he knew that he was being told to do wrong things.
This prince was torn because he didn't know what to do. One day the prince is given an instruction to go out and destroy, and just as he's getting ready to go out, that uncertain feeling inside of him reaches such a point that he woke up. He could no longer do what he had been doing. He just couldn't do it anymore and he remembered that he was a prince.
The good prince goes and finds some of his men, and he tries to jar them awake, “Wake up! We're in the wrong place. This isn't our world. Don't you see it? How can this be our world if all we're doing is wrecking it and wrecking our own world? Who wrecks their own world?” Because the spell was so powerful, only a few of the men were able to be snapped out it sufficiently enough to follow him home back to the good kingdom and the good king.
