This is funny. And sad.

But if they would’ve been paying attention instead of drinking the hater-ade…

They’d know exactly what I was talking about.

Listen, I pay my team very well, and in fact…

I make it a point to overpay, and I have guys making over $700K a year.

And truth be told… There was a guy in the video who started with me at $3,000 a month but has since gone on to earn millions.

So, when I say I want them to stay broke…

I mean, I want them to adopt the same mentality I have, which is to stay broke and invest in themselves.

See, when I was coming up, I never blew cash on the Porsches or Rolexes.

I’ve lived on 20% of my income and invested the rest into assets, with #1 being myself.

And this is key because it forced me to stay hungry and work to increase the 20% I was living on.

So, that’s why I push my team to do the same…

And, it’s why I’m bringing you the same message today.

Because if you want to win big…

You have to push to surpass your targets, invest in yourself, and reach your full potential.

And if I can do it, you can do it as well.

Especially once you surround yourself with people who want to break barriers…

And upgrade their mindset to never be capped mentally or financially.

One of the biggest challenges you’ll face as a business owner is staying consistent. Almost anyone can launch a new coaching practice or home improvement service, or start a new TikTok channel.

(That’s the easy part of running a business.)

The tough part of entrepreneurship is showing up on Mondays or Tuesdays or Wednesdays…

When you’d rather be nailing strokes on the golf course…

Or when your inbox is screaming for your attention…

Or when uncertainty is gnawing at you – day in and day out.

Quick story…

When I was 25 years old, I checked into a drug and alcohol treatment center.

By that point, I’d been abusing drugs for nearly a decade.

I’d been fired from my first 6 jobs.

And every other month I missed my rent payments.  My rent was just $275 per month and, still, I couldn’t make it.

I didn’t need other people telling me I was a loser.  I knew it.

And yet…

I had these grandiose ideas about writing books, speaking on stages, and earning millions of dollars a year.

When I left the treatment center, I got a job selling cars.

Some days I made one sale.

Other days I made two sales.

A lot of times I sold zero.

I would wake up most mornings thinking I should give up on selling cars.  And I should give up on my dreams.

I remember my drug counselor telling me I should quit aiming so high…

That I had a disease…

And that I was powerless over my addiction.

Truth is, I believed I would struggle to make it.  I believed I would ultimately give up.

However…

About 2 years into selling cars, I had an “epiphany.”

I realized I had been sold that I was an addict.

I had been sold that I was unmanageable and powerless to make my dreams a reality.

It dawned on me…

If I had been sold on giving up… all I had to do was sell myself on doing whatever it takes to succeed.

Why am I telling you this story?

Because I’m here to sell YOU on why you have what it takes to make your dreams a reality – in any economy

Right now, a lot of people are selling you on seeking safety.

They’re selling you on getting a job, or slashing your sales targets, or shrinking your team.

Of course, some businesses won’t make it in the coming months.

What’s your story?

List all of it from when you were a kid.

The good, the bad, and the ugly… Because that’s where the gold is hiding.

See, most people?  They try to “create” ideas or a brand persona…

But all the ideas you need come from your own life and your own problems.

Because that’s what people connect with. 

I do this whiteboard exercise 6-8 times a year still to this day because it’s still the foundation of my marketing.

It tells people who I am, where I came from, what I overcame…

And how I can help them.

So, before you send another dime to Meta, Google, TikTok, etc.

Spend some time writing out your story and your message, and then promote, promote, promote.

And I can tell you from experience that reprogramming your money beliefs is one of the keys to expanding your wealth in any economy. Let me give you an example… My father hustled his whole life to live the “middle class dream.”  He worked late at the office.  And he saved his pennies. My mom and dad thought they had made it.  But their middle class bliss wouldn’t last… why? Because my father died suddenly when I was just 10 years old. So… she went into contraction mode. She sold everything we owned. She slashed costs. Until she had stripped our lifestyle to the bone. For years after, I didn’t wise up either.  I thought external circumstances determined my success.  I blamed my parents… The government… 1970s stagflation. You name it, I blamed it.  Until I realized something important:  Every year my money is going to get worse… or it’s going to get better. It’s not up to Republicans, or Democrats, or the Federal Reserve. It’s not up to the stock market.  Or the labor market. And it’s not up to the economy.  It’s up to me. The biggest obstacle you’ll face this year is not the recession.

It’s not soaring inflation…

Skyrocketing interest rates…

Or your prospects locking up their wallets…

It’s your mind.

And I can tell you from experience that reprogramming your money beliefs is one of the keys to expanding your wealth in any economy.

Let me give you an example…

My father hustled his whole life to live the “middle class dream.”  He worked late at the office.  And he saved his pennies.

My mom and dad thought they had made it.  But their middle class bliss wouldn’t last… why?

Because my father died suddenly when I was just 10 years old.

Of course, for my mom, this was a massive problem.  All of a sudden our household income plummeted to zero…

Leaving my mom with 5 kids, a mortgage, and bills multiplying by the day.

So… she went into contraction mode.

She sold everything we owned.

She slashed costs.

Until she had stripped our lifestyle to the bone.

Knowing what I know now, I would have told my mom not to contract.  But back then, I wasn’t that smart.

For years after, I didn’t wise up either.  I thought external circumstances determined my success.  I blamed my parents…

The government…

1970s stagflation.

You name it, I blamed it.  Until I realized something important: 

Every year my money is going to get worse… or it’s going to get better.

It’s not up to Republicans, or Democrats, or the Federal Reserve.

It’s not up to the stock market.  Or the labor market.

And it’s not up to the economy.  It’s up to me.

The actions I take today determine whether I will finish this year richer or poorer.

It’s why – if you want to end 2023 in better financial shape than today – you must first get rid of your middle class mentality.

And look… it isn’t always easy to shake the “little think” we’ve been programmed with.

I saw an interesting study about this recently.

When a team of researchers from Stanford and Berkeley studied people’s financial choices, they discovered something fascinating.

They found adults who watched their parents lose money during the Great Depression… hoarded more cash and invested less of it.

On the flipside…

Adults who watched their parents expand their wealth during their childhood… took greater risks to multiply their own money.

In other words…

The financial reality you witness growing up creates the way YOU think about money today.

If you’re like me, you dread New Year’s Resolutions.

Part of it is hearing the same old things…

  • “This year will be different.”
  • “This year I will get rich.”
  • “This year I will lose 20 pounds.”

The thing is, for most people… it won’t happen.

And it never had a real chance of happening either.

Heck, by January 20th, lots of people will quit going to the gym, working on shedding the weight they want to lose, and whatever else they made a resolution about.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Look, your bank account isn’t going to change unless you make changes.

This year will be like last year… the year before that… and the year before that…

If you don’t make changes.

I heard recently that 80% of all New Year’s resolutions don’t work.

80%.

That’s just crazy.

I’ve done a deep dive and really studied the problem.

I’ve uncovered six big reasons why New Year’s Resolutions don’t work.

But for today… I’m going to share the top two.

Why?

It’s like chasing rabbits.

#1 Reason Why Resolutions Don't Work: No Real Commitment

There’s no commitment of time, money, or resources.

Let me give you an example.

It’s not enough to want to lose 20 pounds. Or to tell someone else that you want to lose weight this year.

That’s just wishful thinking… like most resolutions.

In order to make losing weight a reality…

You need to commit to taking time to exercise, to eat better, to get better quality sleep, and so on.

You might need to commit to joining a gym.

Or buy some home exercise equipment.

Or get up a little earlier each morning to fit a workout in before you get busy with the rest of your day.

It’s the commitment, not the resolution, that moves you closer to reaching the goal.

#1 Reason Why Resolutions Don't Work: No Real Plan

You've got to have a plan.

I don't mean a plan on how to do it.

I'm talking about the plan on what you do each day.

A plan for when you go to bed to get enough sleep…

When you wake up to start your day…

What are you doing at nine o'clock… ten o'clock… two o'clock, etc.

You can change a plan if it’s not working. You can modify a plan to make it work better too.

But you've got to have a plan first.

What do you do when you’re not feeling it?

Because no matter who you're watching or who you're following on social media…

Whether it's a politician, a rapper, a movie star, a teacher, a coach, or a parent…

No matter how much confidence they put out…

Everyone wakes up and has days when they aren’t feeling it.

They don’t want to do anything…

They’re feeling uncertain…

Or they’re feeling down.

You know, everybody expects me to be feeling it all the time…

They expect me to 10X everything… and to feel 100% every single day.

And that’s not the case with me.

So today, I'm going to share 3 things that I do to get through a funk.

Here’s the first thing I do. 

I get a little closer to where I want to be…

Just like I did when I was 30 years old and starting my speaking career.

I knew back then that I wanted to become one of the top 3 speakers in the world…

But I didn't know how I was going to get there.

So I just got a little closer each day.

I flew to all these cities I’d never been to in my life…

I was going door-to-door to businesses around America…

In cities where I knew no one, and no one knew me.

Remember, I had no name, no books, and no social media back then.

This might surprise you, but I NEVER felt like doing it…

I was scared to death and I had no clue what I was doing…

I didn’t even know how much I believed in what I was doing.

I believed in myself, but I didn’t have any statistics, facts, or success stories to prove myself yet.

It was terrifying.

And to conquer the fear… I would just get a little closer…

A little closer to the location… a little closer to the action.

Taking that little step can help you go a long way.

In fact, you don't have to commit to doing anything completely… just get a little closer each day.

Now, here’s the second thing I do.

I tell myself, “Do it anyway.”

I learned this from a buddy of mine when I first started my business.

I had just lost a job and was making a mid-career transition.

So I was having a lot of problems… and going through tremendous amounts of uncertainty.

Not many people besides my twin brother know this…

But I actually went a year without working and just lived off my savings.

So my buddy got real with me.

He told me something that has stuck with me now for almost 30 years.

He said, “Look, when you wake up in the morning, no matter what you're feeling, no matter how much you hurt, no matter if your eyes are bleeding… Do it anyway.”

So that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 30 years.

It’s not about whether I’m feeling it… feeling motivated… or feeling hyped up.

You can’t count on something as fickle as motivation to get things done.

So no matter how it feels, do the hard thing anyway.

And here’s the third thing I do…

I show up and give it my best shot.

It doesn’t matter what outcome you’re looking for, whether it’s doing a presentation, making a phone call, or going to the gym…

Once you're in there, once you get going…

Start moving in that direction… and give it your best shot.

When I don’t want to work out… I put on my gym clothes and walk around outside the gym.

Eventually, the momentum gets me inside the gym… and I work out for maybe three minutes.

The next thing I know, I realize I’m glad to be there… and I give it my best shot.

So if you’re struggling to push through each day… remember:

  1. Get a little closer.
  2. Do it anyway.
  3. Once you get in there, give it your best shot.

And if you get to (3) and you're still struggling…

Remember when you leave, at least you showed up.

At least you gave it something.

And then do the same thing again the next day.
