The First Step to Promoting Yourself Successfully – Guest Post by Grant Cardone
It’s one of our mantras here…
Promote, Promote, Promote.
And right now, in the world we live in, it’s never been easier.
But, if you remember the pre-internet and social media days like me, you know this wasn’t always the case.
See, between the ages of 30-45… Nobody had a clue who I was.
And that meant hitting the road 250 days a year…
Racking up 3 million miles of travel on my body…
And knocking on door after door to promote my business.
Sound like fun? It wasn’t.
It was the “snail mail” of marketing. Slow, unpredictable, and painful.
So, when I hear people complain today about marketing being “tough,” I just think, “you have no idea.”
But I get it.
I understand the challenges business owners face today…
And this isn’t meant to be a “when I was young, I walked 30 miles to school… in a blizzard” message.
Because while social media platforms and email, etc. have given us massive opportunities…
What most entrepreneurs and business owners struggle with is the “what” and the “how.”
What do I talk about?
What should my messaging be to connect with potential customers?
And, even if these are dialed in… How do I monetize all of this?
Because let’s be honest…
I doubt you’re interested in being a social media “influencer” with Likes and thumbs up that don’t pay the bills.
And, you might be thinking it’s easy for me to sit here and talk about all of this since Forbes named me the #1 Marketing Influencer to Watch…
But remember… It wasn’t always like this.
And what I found way back when to promote myself when nobody knew me still holds true today.
Write Your Story
I mean this in the literal sense.
Take out a whiteboard, and write out your story.
Who are you?
What have you accomplished?
What have you failed at?
What’s your story?
List all of it from when you were a kid.
The good, the bad, and the ugly… Because that’s where the gold is hiding.
See, most people? They try to “create” ideas or a brand persona…
But all the ideas you need come from your own life and your own problems.
Because that’s what people connect with.
I do this whiteboard exercise 6-8 times a year still to this day because it’s still the foundation of my marketing.
It tells people who I am, where I came from, what I overcame…
And how I can help them.
So, before you send another dime to Meta, Google, TikTok, etc.
Spend some time writing out your story and your message, and then promote, promote, promote.
