One night the poet Awhadi of Kerman was sitting on his porch, bent over a vessel. Shams e-Tabrizi happened to pass by.

Shams: What are you doing?

Awhadi: Contemplating the moon in a bowl of water.

Shams: Unless you have broken your neck, why don't you look at the moon in the sky?

Barber and the White Hairs

A bearded man went to a barber shop and said to the master barber: I am bringing home a new wife; I would like you to cut off the white hairs in my beard.

The master took the scissors, cut off the whole beard, put it in front of the man and said: I don't have time. Pick out the white hairs yourself.

Who Is It

A lover knocked at the door of his beloved.

Who is it? she replied.

The lover replied, It is I.

Go away. This house will not hold you and I.

The rejected lover retreated into the wilderness. For a long time he prayed and meditated on the beloved's words. Finally he returned and knocked at the door again.

Who is it? she said again.

The lover replied, It is you.

Immediately, the door opened.

The Swearing Arab and God’s Message

One day the Prophet Mohammad was performing the morning prayer in the mosque. An Arab aspirant of Islam was among others praying with the Prophet. Mohammad happened to recite a verse in the Koran about Pharaoh's claim, I am your true God. Upon hearing this the Arab was seized with such wrath that he interrupted his prayer to shout:

The son-of-a-bitch braggart!

When the Prophet finished the prayer, his companions began to chide the Arab: Not only is your prayer no good because you interrupted it with extraneous words, but you used dirty language in the presence of God's Prophet.

The Arab stood trembling with fear and embarrassment, whereupon Gabriel appeared and said to the Prophet:

God sends you salaam and wishes that these people stop chastising this simple Arab; indeed his sincere curse moved me more than many a pious rosary prayer.

Take My Hand

One day Mulla Nasrudin saw a crowd gathered around a pond. A Moslem priest with a huge turban on his head had fallen in the water and was calling for help.

People were leaning over and saying, Give me your hand Reverend! Give me your hand! But the priest didn't pay attention to their offer to rescue him; he kept wrestling with the water and shouting for help.

Finally Mulla Nasrudin stepped forward: Let me handle this. He stretched out his hand toward the priest and shouted at him, Take my hand!

The priest grabbed Mulla's hand and was hoisted out of the pond. People, very surprised, asked Mulla for the secret of his strategy.

It is very simple, he replied. I know this miser wouldn't give anything to anyone. So instead of saying ‘Give me your hand,' I said, ‘take my hand,' and sure enough he took it.
