An ancient story is, a king is getting old…. He has three sons, and all are intelligent. They are triplets, born together, so there is no question of who is the eldest; otherwise, there would have been no problem, the eldest son would have been the successor. The problem was, who out of the three is going to be the successor? They are all of the same age. In horse riding they are all of equal efficiency; in archery they are equally great. In every field it is impossible to decide who is the best of the three.

He asked his master, an old wise man living in the forest: “I am getting old, and somebody has to succeed me and take care of the kingdom. And I am in great difficulty: can you give me some idea how to choose the right person?” And the wise man gave him some advice.

The king came back, and he gave an equal amount of money to all three sons and told them — because they all had their own palaces — that, “With this money, you have to manage to fill your palaces completely. And after seven days I will come to see: whoever succeeds in filling the house totally, better than the other two, is going to succeed me as the king of the kingdom.”

They were puzzled, because the money was not that great. They thought of many things, but the palaces were big — how to fill them completely?

The first prince went to the municipal corporation and asked, “From today, all the trucks that throw the garbage of the town outside the city should throw it into my palace — because with that money only this much is possible, to fill the palace completely.”

He filled the palace completely. The whole neighborhood was angry; even the traffic on the road stopped — because it was stinking. But they could not do anything — he was the prince, and it was a question of a certain test. The king himself has asked.

The second prince was very much worried… asked many people. But they said, “With such a small amount of money it is very difficult. What your brother has done… he has filled the house; you can do something similar. Just purchase cheap grass, fill the house.” He purchased cheapest quality of grass, which even animals were not ready to eat, but still the house was not full; it was only half full.

They were both worried about what the third brother was doing, because he looked absolutely unconcerned. Six days had passed and he had not done anything. And the seventh day came, and by the evening, as the sun set the king came with the wise old man.

It was impossible to come close to the first son’s house. The king said, “This idiot, he has really filled the house — but with garbage! It is disgusting, I am feeling sick.”

But the old man said, “You had asked… and we have to go and see. Just have a little patience. You need not stay long; just have a look to see whether he has filled the house or not.”

They saw it.

They went to the second son’s house…. It was not better, but it was not worse either. It was rotten grass, but the house was half full.

The king was very much disappointed — so much so that he thought that it would be better not to go to house of the third prince. Because these idiots… what they have done is not worth seeing.

But the wise man said, “You have to go, because the decision has to be taken.”

They went to the house of the third young man. They entered the house, and they were puzzled — because it was absolutely empty. He had even removed the furniture, the paintings, the statues, other things of the house… everything was removed. The house was utterly empty.

They asked the son, “What have you done?”

He said to the father, “You just see, it is full.”

He looked around. He said, “It is absolutely empty, you are befooling us.”

The wise old man said, “Don’t be angry with him; it is full, but it is full with something that you are not acquainted with. What he has done is that he has just purchased candles and put the candles all over the house — it is full of light.” Light is not material, it is not objective.

The word `objective’ is beautiful; it means that which objects to you. You want to go through the wall. The wall will object, will prevent you; the wall is objective.

Light is immaterial. It is a strange phenomenon on the earth. In a sense it is outside you, can be called objective, but in another sense it is not creating any objection — you can pass through it, it is immaterial.

It was thought for centuries that light had no weight; just recently they have discovered that it has weight, but it is almost neglible. When the sky is without clouds and the sun is burning hot, all the rays that fall on five square miles will have some weight that can be detected. If we could collect all those rays, they would give you a little sense of weight.

So in a way, light is part of the objective world, and in a way it is part of the non-objective world.

The old man said, “You don’t understand the boy.”

And the boy returned most of the money. He said, “This was too much. I could have filled the house in many other dimensions also. I could have brought music into the house, which has no weight. I could have brought incense into the house — the fragrance has no weight, and it would fill the house. But I thought that would be doing too much. This is enough — and why waste your money? You take your money back; a small part of your money was enough.”

I have often told a small story about a great journalist who died and reached the doors of heaven. The doors of heaven and hell are not far apart; they are just opposite each other. The distance is not much, and naturally one would like to enter heaven. So he knocked on the door.

The doorkeeper opened a small window in the door and asked, “What do you want?” He said, “I am a great journalist. I have just died, and I want to enter.” The doorkeeper said, “I am sorry but I have to refuse you — because we have a quota; we can have only twelve journalists in heaven. That quota has been filled for centuries — for centuries, no new journalist has entered. And anyway, even those twelve are utterly useless because nothing happens in heaven. They tried to publish a newspaper, but only one issue appeared — because there are only saints here — no murder, no suicide, no crime, no politics, no struggle for power… no change ever happens; everything is eternally the same. From where can you get news?”

“And,” the doorkeeper said, “you must have heard the definition of news: when a dog bites a man it is not news, but when a man bites a dog it is news. So nothing sensational happens here, no love affair… When people get bored, they read the first issue that was published centuries ago. “You should go to hell. Every moment tremendous things happen there. All the active people of the world, all the creative people of the world are there — painters, musicians, poets, actors, dancers, thieves, murderers, rapists, psychoanalysts, philosophers — you will find every variety.

“Heaven is monotonous. Only dull, dead saints — skeletons. Their only quality is that they don’t do anything. So just go to hell and enjoy. You will find everything that you may have missed on earth — because for centuries upon centuries, all the juicy people have collected there. In fact, I myself want to go… but once you get into heaven, you cannot escape. So I am stuck here. My suggestion is that you just go.”

But journalists are stubborn people. He said, “I have a suggestion, and I think you must be compassionate enough to do it for me. Just give me twenty-four hours’ entry. If I can convince one of the journalists inside to go to hell then you can put me in the quota; twelve journalists will remain twelve.” The gatekeeper said, “It is unheard of, there is no precedent. But I cannot say no to you. Go in, have a try. But remember, after twenty-four hours…. I am taking a risk. After twenty-four hours, come back.”

After twenty-four hours he came back. In those twenty-four hours he had created a rumor among all the journalists: “A big newspaper is going to be started in hell and there is great need for editors, sub-editors, story writers, all kinds of journalists. The salaries are great. So what are you doing HERE?”

After twenty-four hours when the journalist came to the gate, the gatekeeper said, “Go back. You cannot go out now.” The journalist said, “Why not?” The gatekeeper said, “I have kept my word, and you have to keep your word.

You were very convincing. All twelve journalists have gone. I tried hard to explain that `This is just a rumor; don’t spoil your heaven.’ But they wouldn’t listen.”

The man himself had created the rumor, but he had started thinking perhaps there was something in it; otherwise twelve persons wouldn’t go to hell for no reason. He said, “Just open the door!” He was convinced by others being convinced.

And this happens to millions of people. When you see that seven hundred million people are convinced that Catholic Christianity is the only religion, it is difficult to say that those seven hundred million people can be wrong. The sheer number has such weight. That’s why all the religions go on trying to increase their numbers. They have their methods to increase their numbers because the more you increase the numbers the more you convince those who are not in your fold that they are wrong and you are right. Your sheer majority is an argument; it validates anything you say.

He became an advisor to the king, who treated him with great respect. Seeing the honour that Mahabodhi received from the king, the other ministers became jealous. So, one day, finding the king alone in the garden, the jealous ministers approached him and said, “Your highness, you’ve been following Mahabodhi’s advice and practicing the kind of life he recommends. But what can a Brahmin know about politics and kingly duties?” The foolish king was easily convinced of the minister’s words and started ignoring Mahabodhi’s advice from then on. When a great Sufi mystic, Hassan, was dying, somebody asked, ‘Hassan, who was your Master?’

He said, ‘Now it is too late to ask. Time is short, I am dying.’ But the inquirer asked, ‘You can simply say the name. You are still alive, you are still breathing and talking, you can simply tell me the name.’

He said, ‘It will be difficult because I had thousands of Masters. If I just relate their names it will take months and years. It is too late. But three Masters I will certainly tell you about.

‘One was a thief. Once I got lost in the desert, and when I reached the village it was very late. Half the night was already gone; shops were closed, caravanserais were closed. There was not a single human being on the roads. I searched for somebody to inquire of. I found one man who was trying to make a hole in the wall of a house. I asked him where I could stay, and he said, “I am a thief, and you look like a Sufi mystic to me.”‘ His robe, his aura. ‘And the thief said, “Right now it will be very difficult to find any place to stay, but you can come to my home. You can stay with me — if you can stay with a thief.” ‘

Hassan said, ‘I hesitated a little bit. Then I remembered. If the thief is not afraid of a Sufi, then why should the Sufi be afraid of a thief? In fact, he should be afraid of me. So I said, “Yes, I will come.” And I went, and I stayed with the thief. And the man was so lovely, so beautiful, I stayed for one month! And each night he would say to me, “Now I am going to my work. You rest, you pray, you do your work.” And when he would come back I would ask, “Could you get anything?” He said, “Not tonight. But tomorrow I will try again.” And he was never in a state of hopelessness.

‘For one month continuously he came empty-handed, but he was always happy. And he said, “I will try tomorrow. God willing, tomorrow it is going to happen. And you also pray for me. At least you can say to God, ‘Help this poor man.'”

And then Hassan said, ‘When I was meditating and meditating for years on end, nothing was happening, and many times the moment came when I was so desperate, so hopeless that I thought to stop all this nonsense. There is no God, and all this prayer is just madness, all this meditation is false — and suddenly I would remember the thief who would say every night, “God willing, tomorrow it is going to happen.”

‘So I tried one day more. If the thief was so hopeful, with such hope and trust, I should try at least one day more. And many times it happened, but the thief and the memory of him helped me to wait one day more. And one day, it happened, it DID happen! I bowed down. I was thousands of miles away from the thief and his house, but I bowed down in his direction. He was my first Master.

‘And my second Master was a dog. I was thirsty and I was going towards the river, and a dog came. He was also thirsty. He looked into the river, he saw another dog there — his own image — and became afraid. He barked and the other dog barked, too. But his thirst was so much that he would hesitate and go back. He would come again and look into the water and find the dog there. But the thirst was so much that he suddenly jumped into the water, and the image disappeared. He drank the water, he swam in the water — it was a hot summer. And I was watching. I knew that a message had come to me from God. One has to jump in spite of all fears.

‘When I was on the verge of jumping into the unknown, the same fear was there. I would go to the very edge, hesitate, and come back. And I would remember the dog. If the dog could manage, why not I? And then one day I jumped into the unknown. I disappeared and only the unknown was left behind. The dog was my second Master.

‘And the third Master was a small child. I entered into a town and a small child was bringing a candle, a lit candle, hiding it in his hands and going to the mosque to put the candle there. Just joking, I asked the boy, “Have you lit the candle yourself?” He said, “Yes, sir.” And I asked, jokingly, “Can you tell me from where the light came? There was a moment when the candle was unlit, then there was a moment when the candle was lit, can you show me the source from which the light came? And you have lit it, so you must have seen the light coming — from where?” And the boy laughed and blew out the candle, and said, “Now you have seen the light going, where has it gone? You tell me!” And my ego was shattered, and my whole knowledge was shattered. And that moment I felt my own stupidity. Since then I dropped all knowledgeability.’

Osho: ”Secret of Secrets“

What Is the Spiritual Moral / Meaning of Osho's “Hope, Fear And Knowledge” Story?

In the layers of this tale lie profound spiritual teachings, each unveiling a different facet of wisdom. The first Master, the thief, embodies resilience and unwavering hope amidst adversity. The thief's relentless optimism, despite returning empty-handed each night, illuminates the power of faith and perseverance. It's a testament to the thief's unyielding belief in the possibilities of tomorrow, a belief that becomes a guiding light in moments of despair. Through this, Hassan learns that hope, regardless of circumstance, can be a potent force steering one through the darkest of nights.

The second Master, the dog, exemplifies the courage to confront fears and uncertainties. The dog, driven by thirst, confronts its reflection in the water, barking at its own image out of fear. Yet, the overwhelming need for water compels it to leap past the fear, leading to the dissolution of the perceived obstacle. Hassan finds resonance in this, acknowledging that the leap into the unknown, despite the looming fears, is the catalyst for transcendence. It teaches the profound truth that fear can dissolve once one takes that courageous leap forward.

The third Master, the innocent child with the candle, unravels the illusion of knowledge and ego. The child's playful response to Hassan's inquiry dismantles the constructs of understanding and ego. The child's act of blowing out the candle, challenging Hassan's need for definitive answers, shatters the illusion of knowledge. It brings forth the recognition that enlightenment doesn't come from accumulation but from the release of the ego-driven quest for understanding. In letting go of the need to comprehend, one opens up to the true essence of enlightenment.

Each Master in Hassan's life imparts a distinct spiritual lesson, serving as guiding beacons on the path of self-realization. The thief exemplifies unwavering faith, urging us to hold onto hope in the face of adversity. The dog teaches us the transformative power of leaping into the unknown, surpassing fears that obstruct our growth. Lastly, the child unveils the folly of the ego-driven pursuit of knowledge, inviting us to embrace the enigmatic nature of existence.

These Masters converge to paint a spiritual landscape, each stroke revealing the tapestry of life's teachings. They remind us that wisdom often comes from the most unexpected sources and that enlightenment isn't confined within the boundaries of traditional understanding. Instead, it emerges from experiences that challenge our perceptions and beliefs.

This story isn't merely a recounting of Hassan's encounters but a profound allegory for the human journey. It beckons us to embrace hope in times of despair, to confront our fears courageously, and to relinquish the shackles of ego-driven knowledge. Ultimately, it urges us to weave these lessons into the fabric of our lives, allowing them to guide our steps toward spiritual awakening.

In the tapestry of existence, these Masters serve as threads weaving a narrative of resilience, courage, and humility. Their teachings echo through the corridors of time, resonating with the seekers of truth, guiding them toward the realization that spirituality transcends the confines of dogma and doctrine. It's a journey marked by the transformative power of hope, courage, and the willingness to surrender the ego at the altar of enlightenment.

I now realize that I can't keep running away from life. Sooner or later I have to face the ultimate problems of the universe. So now I am ready to steel myself and try to work in earnest on the problem you gave me.

Master: “What problem was that?”

Novice: “You said that you have a staff and yet you don't have a staff. How do I explain that?”

Master: “Is that what I really said? Why how silly of me!”

As told by Osho in ‘Take it easy'

Legend has it that right after his Enlightenment, Buddha decided to go for a walk in the country. On the way he came upon a farmer, who was impressed at the light shining from the master.

My friend, who are you? asked the farmer. Because I have the feeling that I am standing before an angel, or a God.

I am nothing of the sort, answered Buddha.

Maybe you're a powerful sorcerer?

Not that either.

So, what makes you so different from the others that even a simple peasant like me notices it?

I am just someone who has awoken to life. That's all. But I tell everyone that, and nobody believes me.

Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian author who has sold more than 100 million books, which include 14 short story collections and the novel “The Alchemist.

The most revered building at No Wind monastery was a quiet, humble structure that stood at the outskirts of the grounds and boasted the sign, The Library of God. The monks knew this building was a special place, not only because they could feel the divine vibrations just by being near it, but also because all the special monks who Zen Master Blumise had allowed into the library, always came out enlightened.

The strange thing about the library though, was that no one knew which books it held. You see, whenever an enlightened monk emerged from the library, and was asked which books he/she had had the privilege to read there, the monk always just smiled and said, You will see when your time comes. Of course, there were plenty or rumors about which books were in the great library. The original Vedas some said, perfect version of the Diamond Sutra said others, it was the purest Bible, the best Koran, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, etc, etc. In fact, the most recent rumor was that it was a special text left behind by a now extinct civilization! In short, the theories were many, but the facts were none.

All the monks worked very hard on their spiritual growth hoping to be picked to enter this sacred library. You see, it was well understood that only advanced monks, who were ripe for enlightenment, were chosen by Master Blumise and this was an opportunity the monks desperately wanted. Such a day finally arrived for Monk Shanti. She had spent many years at the monastery and Master Blumise now felt she was ready for the final step in her journey.

Shanti's good friend monk Chin, wished her good luck as she stepped through the hallowed doors to spend the next few weeks in isolation in the legendary library. As she walked in, she was amazed by the overwhelming sacred atmosphere that permeated the entire building. The very air was holy and just being there, she felt the blessings of a thousand saints. In front of her was a great hall, The Only Book You Need to Read, was etched above it's entrance and in the center of the great hall, sat a silent zafu (zen meditation cushion). The silent zafu was the only object in the entire library.

Shanti smiled as she as made her way to the zafu, her attention now fully focused on her mind and thoughts.

A couple of years ago I met a dear old lady who I will call Annie (not her real name). She was 97 and very frail and unable to walk but with a mind as bright as a button. I only knew her for a few short weeks before she passed on but I felt I knew her for a lifetime. We shared so much of ourselves in that short time and I feel very blessed to have known her.

I attended Annie's funeral and it was there that I received the first part of a profound enlightenment. When the eulogies were being given, I suddenly experienced what I call the God feeling very strongly. (This intense feeling of total love goes way beyond anything mortal and it has often accompanied major aha moments, especially in the early days of my relationship with God. I soon came to understand that God wanted me to know that the new insight or piece of wisdom came from Him. The knowledge that I have acquired during these moments I call absolute knowings because I have known beyond a shadow of doubt that these learnings were absolute truth.)

It became apparent to me that God wanted me to listen very carefully to what was being said. Annie's son was talking at the time about the way that Annie totally accepted everyone she encountered in her life, regardless of their situation, belief, habits or attitudes. She truly did know that we are all one and treated everyone equally. And I thought to myself, What is the lesson here? I do endeavour to accept everyone! This doesn't seem to be anything that I haven't already learnt.

It was a few days later before I realised that it was myself that I had to learn to accept unconditionally. I already accepted others as they are (along with their faults) but I have always been very hard on myself for the slightest little mistake or oversight on my part. It was okay for others to be less than perfect but I couldn't accept that in myself.

It never ceases to amaze me how different events in our lives (and past lives) fall together to create a complete story. Shortly after Annie's funeral, I had a thought that kept popping into my head that I had done a terrible wrong to a friend of mine in another lifetime. I didn't want to think about it because it was really a very big transgression but my thoughts kept returning there regardless. And then I had a dream (something I don't do very often as I am more likely to have waking dreams). In the dream I was the victim of the same transgression and the perpetrator in this instance was someone I also know very well in this lifetime.

As I was thinking about how these events were related (and also feeling rather bad because I knew my previous transgression was true), I felt what I call the voice feeling which is hard to describe. I don't audibly hear actual words but I feel the words instead (and I have to admit that I am just a little envious of Neale Donald Walsch and Barbara Rose who do actually hear God's voice audibly). And the voice said to me, Do you judge the one who wronged you?

And I thought no I don't, it doesn't make any difference to the way I feel about this person at all. And the voice said, Well why are you judging yourself so harshly for your wrongdoing when you can accept it in another? And that's when I realised that all of these events occurred so that I might learn to accept myself as readily as I accept others. It is not a lesson totally learnt even now and I do still tend to berate myself for not doing everything I set out to do but I have definitely made some progress and have somewhat relaxed my expectations of myself to a level which is more humanly achievable.

After being agnostic for most of my life, Pat became a believer just a few years ago and has been on an amazing spiritual journey ever since.

Part 1: Totonaka the Fanatic

Monk Totonaka had just joined Nowind Monastery a few months back, and he was absolutely delighted with all the spiritual growth he had experienced there in that short time. You see for many years, prior to joining Nowind, Totonaka had worked furiously to try to awaken himself.

He had meditated night and day, and had been absolutely obsessed with enlightenment. In fact, he had pushed himself so hard, that finally he suffered a full mental and physical breakdown due to the stress and endless hours he had put his mind and body through.

It was then that he had sought out Master Blumise, who had been instrumental in not only nursing him back to health, but also helping him rapidly make progress on the path to enlightenment. Here is how Mastery Blumise had accomplished so much so fast.

You see when Totonaka joined Nowind, Master Blumise explained to him the profound Law of Reincarnation. He told Totonaka that this was one of many lives that he would live and that the work he did in this life would carry over to the next, just as the work he had done in previous incarnations were responsible for his current spiritual state. He indicated to him that there was no need to overstress his body and mind with excessive meditation practice, and that he should relax and let things take their natural course.

This advice was exactly the serum that Totonaka needed to cure his maladies. It made him relax and let go. He stopped meditating like a man possessed, which gave his body a chance to heal and recover, and he let go of his attachment to enlightenment, which allowed him to stop focusing on the future and come into the here and now. This led to Totonaka making rapid progress on the road to nirvana, and he eagerly shared this development with his best friend Junjo.

Junjo, like Totonaka was immensely interested in enlightenment as well, and when he heard how well things had worked out for Totonaka at Nowind, he too decided to join the monastery. Junjo's problems though, were opposite of Totonaka's. He was one lazy monk. He would meditate off and on, and indulge in all the sensory pleasures he could get his hands and body on. As a result, his body was bloated, his mind dull and his spiritual progress stalled.

Part 2: Junjo the Lazy

Here is how the conversation between Master Blumise and Junjo went.

Junjo! yelled Master Blumise.

Yes Master, came the delayed response, irritating an already agitated Blumise further.

I don't know where you learned this nonsense, but there is no such thing as reincarnation, soul, higher self, and the rest of that mambo jumbo rubbish! You get but one crack at this life and if you screw it up, that is it. There are no second chances. Either you get your act together and awaken, or you lie on your death bed and lament wasting this most precious of opportunities, blasted Master Blumise.

But, master, you told Totonaka … Junjo tried to argue.

Shut up! It is all lies. There is no reincarnation and being lazy and wasting this life is the greatest sin you can commit, Blumise interrupted harshly. And that was the end of that. The transformation of Junjo was as remarkable as that of Totonaka. He too in a few short months, got his body and mind in shape by ending his indulgent ways, and made enormous spiritual progress by meditation regularly, intensely and seriously.
