About Peter Levine

Martha Peterson is a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator and leader in the field of Somatic Education. She is the founder and CEO of Essential Somatics® and author of Move Without Pain. Martha heads a growing faculty of Clinical Somatic Educators who present Essential Somatics trainings, retreats, and seminars around the world. She maintains a private clinical practice in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Martha’s expertise comes from more than 30 years of working in the field of dance, bodywork, and Somatic Education. As a former professional dancer who suffered chronic hip and knee pain due to injuries, Martha understands the frustration and struggle many people experience trying to discern between the myriad different methods that claim to relieve or “fix” chronic pain. This is how she discovered Clinical Somatic Education, the only method that taught her how to reverse her pain and postural imbalances, regain physical control, and create a life of movement, choice, and joy.

About Your Spiritual Healing Teacher – Dr. Martha Eddy

Dr. Martha Eddy is a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist (RMST), dance educator, and applied physiologist. Her decade as faculty at the School for Body-Mind Centering® and in Laban Movement Studies influenced her to develop the first Somatic Movement Therapy Training, now rebranded as Dynamic Embodiment SMTT, affiliated with Moving On Center in the Bay Area (co-founded with Carol Swann) and several universities. As a professor at Marymount Manhattan College, she was awarded the title of Geraldine Ferraro Fellow of Social Justice. In 1999, she developed Moving For Life, a holistic exercise program for cancer patients that is offered free throughout NYC and around the world.

Martha remains active as a performer and teacher of BodyMind Dancing (with online classes available), and has served on numerous boards, including The Yard, National Dance Education Organization (recipient of outstanding leadership in dance award), the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA-past president), and the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS-past president). Martha was cited in the New York Times three times since 2019 for her work.

Martha also maintains a small private practice specializing with children and adults, and provides educational consulting and evaluation in public schools and dance programs worldwide. As director of the Center for Kinesthetic Education, she has implemented Peaceful Play Program for recess enhancement in New York City, and implements activities from her co-produced DVD, Eye Openers Are Mind Openers. She has been an advisor to BalletMet on developmental research implemented with Head Start, and helps develop curricula and guidelines for the NYC Department of Education.

Her articles and chapters have been published in research, arts, and educational literature. Martha is the author of Mindful Movement: The Evolution of the Somatic Arts and Conscious Action. The book she co-authored with Shakti Andrea Smith, A Dynamic Embodiment Approach to the Sun Salutation, guides readers in how to balance their hormonal system.

Two important systems that mediate quick and precise responses to stresses are the nervous and immune systems. These systems are connected physically and physiologically, and share many similarities that facilitate interactions between them.

You cannot have a well-functioning immune system without a healthy nervous system, and vice-versa!

For the immune system to do its job properly, it has to be well-balanced, and the pathway that keeps the immune system balanced is mediated through the vagus nerve, which innervates many of your organs — including the immune organs, such as the thymus, spleen and gut.

Parasympathetic (rest-digest-detoxify-heal) activation of the vagus nerve is required to keep these organs active. In contrast, sympathetic (fight-or-flight) activation will decrease or even shut down the activity of those organs.

Chronic stress and resulting sympathetic dominance will then lead to chronically lowered levels of immune organ activity, higher levels of immune dysregulation and the inability of the immune system to react to threats appropriately.

The bottom line is that whether you are trying to heal from a chronic illness or fight an acute infection, you cannot properly heal when your nervous system is out of whack.
